Certainly while the principles of a given job should carry over to similar rifles, it is a point worth considering for someone who is looking for more generalized knowledge.Īlso, some information I do not necessarily agree with either. What I mean is that the tasks are geared for a specific project on a specific weapon. Therefore the title of the book in my opinion is misleading.Īnother thing is that at least half of the information in this book is specialized.

However as another reviewer suggested, the tone of this book really is more geared towards an aspiring professional gunsmith than it is for the typical DIYer who is looking to do basic tasks. This book does contain very useful bits of information, and certainly for the price is worth considering adding to the library for any dedicated enthusiast. I really appreciated how Matunas went though cleaning! It seems like that maybe 5% of people manage to thoroughly clean their rifles, and it is no wonder, the junk cleaning kits sold in stores are next to useless. I cannot emphasize enough that 90% of the rifles I've encountered which couldn't shoot (and it wasn't because of a corroded, pitted barrel) was due to extremely heavy copper fouling. The importance of cleaning and the gradual degradation of accuracy due to barrel fowling is addressed.
Maybe it would be worth paying a gunsmith for a half-hour (which will be about 30 bucks) to put on that $800 scope right?

I know of people who buy 800 dollar scopes and then just crank 'em down with an ill-fitting Harbor Freight screw driver or whatever. Pretty quickly it becomes apparent that to do many jobs right, purchasing high-quality specialized tools is necessary, and it doesn't make sense for every guy with a gun out there to have many of these tools. I really think everybody would do well to read this book, if for nothing else, to appreciate the value of your local gunsmith. I thought this book might be too basic, but it turns out there is a lot of good info here. The instructions are fully illustrated with photos and drawings as well as exploded views and parts lists, and much of this information can be applied to other guns with similar actions.
